My Journey to Effective Communication

“No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it.” - H.E. Luccock As cliché as it may sound, but to me, teamwork is the most important skill in putting up the whole project. A good teamwork provides a positive synergy that allows the team to produce results we never thought we could achieve. Just like how I have never expected or to imagine my team and myself to have the honour to share our proposed solution in the presentation showcase. From the brainstorming of the problem we want to solve, to the drafting of our report, and lastly to the presentation of our proposal, I have definitely learned and gained a lot through this journey. All these would not have been possible without a good teamwork of a common goal to achieve greater heights together. 1. Background 1.1 Problems faced by Commuters on Public Trains and Buses A survey was conducted on commuters’ experience on-board train and bus during peak hours and the gathered responses are shown as below in Figure 1.3. Figure 1.1 Feedback on commuters’ experience when taking train/bus during peak hour Some of the problems that were identified are ungracious behavior of commuters such as not moving into empty spaces to allow more passengers to board, and commuters who do not give way to alighting passengers.  This is further supported by the public feedbacks to SBS - “they don’t move to the rear, preferring instead to cram themselves at the front of the bus.” (SBS Transit, n.d.). I have never had enough confidence to carry out a presentation fluently. Through this mock presentation, I have learnt that ample preparation is very important as it will affect one’s confidence to deliver. With that, one will be familiarised with the content and would be able to present smoothly without any glitch. In addition, the biggest take away from the mock presentation will be the value of teamwork. It would not be possible without the help of one another’s constant support and contributions. It is insufficient to only have a good grasp of our own slides, but to also know what our teammates are presenting and so to cover for each other’s oversight. Through this mock presentation, I have a better understanding of my flaws in delivery, such as the lack of passion and eye contacts with the audience.
