Final Reflection

“No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it.” - H.E. Luccock As cliché as it may sound, but to me, teamwork is the most important skill in putting up the whole project. A good teamwork provides a positive synergy that allows the team to produce results we never thought we could achieve. Just like how I have never expected or to imagine my team and myself to have the honour to share our proposed solution in the presentation showcase. From the brainstorming of the problem we want to solve, to the drafting of our report, and lastly to the presentation of our proposal, I have definitely learned and gained a lot through this journey. All these would not have been possible without a good teamwork of a common goal to achieve greater heights together. Although our team have faced many setbacks and challenges, such as changing our proposed solution at the eleventh hour, this brought our team even closer by the encouragements and assurance we gave one anoth...

My Team's Technical Report (Final) - 3D Holographic Display

1. Background 1.1 Problems faced by Commuters on Public Trains and Buses A survey was conducted on commuters’ experience on-board train and bus during peak hours and the gathered responses are shown as below in Figure 1.3. Figure 1.1 Feedback on commuters’ experience when taking train/bus during peak hour Some of the problems that were identified are ungracious behavior of commuters such as not moving into empty spaces to allow more passengers to board, and commuters who do not give way to alighting passengers.  This is further supported by the public feedbacks to SBS - “they don’t move to the rear, preferring instead to cram themselves at the front of the bus.” (SBS Transit, n.d.). Additionally, spaces in the bus is not directed by any staff or displays, hence commuters tend to obstruct around the exit of the bus. It is also taxing for the bus driver to monitor the crowd situation in the bus on top of their usual job scope. Furthermore, question on the reason c...

My Reflection - Mock Presentation

I have never had enough confidence to carry out a presentation fluently. Through this mock presentation, I have learnt that ample preparation is very important as it will affect one’s confidence to deliver. With that, one will be familiarised with the content and would be able to present smoothly without any glitch. In addition, the biggest take away from the mock presentation will be the value of teamwork. It would not be possible without the help of one another’s constant support and contributions. It is insufficient to only have a good grasp of our own slides, but to also know what our teammates are presenting and so to cover for each other’s oversight. Through this mock presentation, I have a better understanding of my flaws in delivery, such as the lack of passion and eye contacts with the audience. With multiple rehearsals on my own as well as with my team, I hope to overcome my shortcomings and to deliver confidently during the upcoming presentation. Moreover, ...

My Team's Technical Report (Draft 1) - 3D Holographic Display

Background According to statistics from the Land Transport Authority (LTA), LRT patronage led the growth, increasing by 10.9 per cent to 152,000 passenger trips per day. This was followed by MRT trips, which climbed 4.2 percent to 2.9 million. The public transport ridership growth has come on the back of a growing population and more prohibitive car prices.) The growing reliance on public transports lead to an increase in a daily average of up to 6.9 million trips, resulting public buses and trains are getting increasingly crowded especially during peak hours. Commuters frequently find it difficult to board and alight the buses and trains when it is packed. For trains, there are currently staffs to organise the traffic at the platforms, however, spaces in the train cabins are not directed, hence commuters tend to hog the space near the door. Similarly for buses, it is also taxing for the bus captain to control the commuters at the back of the bus to move to the back...

My Reader's Response - Use of Cladding in Singapore

From the article "Use of cladding in buildings here have grown in recent times: Experts", Mokhtar (17 June 2017) reported that use of cladding has increased recently in Singapore with strict observation especially after the tragic incident of Grenfell Tower in Kensington. Furthermore, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) is gathering more information on the event to improve on their rules regulating the use of cladding. Cladding has its many uses, such as for the purpose of noise reduction, for aesthetic appeal, as well as to provide insulation to reduce the energy needed to cool a building. Buildings such as Asia Square Tower and The Cathay use cladding for these reasons. However, cladding poses a hazard when it comes to fires, it is due from the ventilation gaps that keeps the building cool but ended up allowing the fire to go up to other levels. Nonetheless, Singapore still adopts the use of cladding but follow strict safety standards on the materials used to ...

My Reader's Response (Draft 1) - Claddings

From the article " Use of cladding in buildings here have grown in recent times: Experts", Mokhtar (17 June 2017) reported that u se of cladding has increased recently, despite being under strict observation after the tragic incident of Grenfell Tower. The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) is gathering more information on the event to improve on their rules regulating the use of cladding. Cladding has its many uses; from noise reduction to purely for aesthetic purposes. It provides insulation to reduce the energy needed to cool down or keep cool a building. Buildings such as Asia Square Tower and The Cathay use cladding for these reasons. However, cladding poses a hazard when it comes to fires, often allowing the fire to spread. Ventilation gaps that keep the building cool end up allowing the fire to go up to other levels. Nonetheless, Singapore still adopts the use of cladding but follow strict safety standards on the materials used to meet the class ‘0’ standar...
